In a game played over two days because of bad weather. England won the toss and decided to have a bowl, knowing the weather would play some part in the fixture.
England bowled well and had Sri Lanka all out in 49overs for 239 just before the threating weather intervened.
Once again Kumar Sangakarra got the bulk of runs for Sri Lanka with a well-played 91. There was some assistant from Matthews with a brisk 40, Dilshan chipped in with 35 and Perara also hitting a quick 29 at the depth.
One man stood out for England with the ball that being Chris Woakes who bowled fantastically to return figures of 6-47 off his 8 overs.
Then the rain hit Pallekele and continued long into the night prompting the officials into using their reserve rain day. The decision was made to finish the game the following day. So England needed 239 off their 50 overs and had to sleep on how they were going to do it.
England lost the danger-man in Moeen Ali who is the top scorer so far in this series. Alistair Cook didn’t look comfortable against the spin from both ends up top and was soon to follow him back.
This brought Joe Root and James Taylor England’s ‘bright future’ going on today’s showing together. These two put on the partnership of the match amounting 104 runs that in affect won the match for England.
James Taylor continued his impressive second chance at the top level with a graceful 68 before he departed when he gave a catch to Mendis off the bowling of Perera.
Root continued on to make a fantastic unbeaten 104* and took his team across the line once again.
The good news is that with the young guys showing their potential, there is plenty of hope for England’s future. The World cup might be a bit soon to start saying ‘yeah were going to win it’ but in a few years but if they are left to blossom and gain experience then we will see the rewards in the long run.
Can England win this series?
We are hitting form at just the right time and the guys who have come in are showing just what they are capable of. England have it all to play for. So yeah I can see a turnaround happening here.
