Woakes to miss the start of the season

Warwickshire all-rounder Chris Woakes will miss the first 6-8 weeks of the county season, after suffering ankle ligament damage while in Barbados during Warwickshire’s pre-season tour.

Woakes sustained the injury at the Kensington Oval when sliding for a ball in the field. The incident was similar to that of Simon Jones in Brisbane, and at the time it was thought that Woakes had broken his ankle.

Woakes had an excellent 2011 for the West Midlands club and averaged 48.25 with the bat, and 21.78 with the ball in the first-class season. Warwickshire ended up finishing second in division one of the county championship, after they were piped to the title by Lancashire on the final day.

Woakes is a big loss to Warwickshire who would have benefitted in the early season from the 23 year olds ability to swing the ball both ways, as well as score vital late order runs.

Woakes has featured for England in four ODI’s and three Twenty20 matches, and when fit will be hoping to push his claims of further international honours.
