Chris Woakes has been called into replace Tim Bresnan for the upcoming Test match tour of New Zealand.

Bresnan has had on-going problems with an elbow injury he sustained last year, and he will return home from India after the final ODI of the series on Sunday to see a specialist.

Woakes is yet to feature for England in Test cricket, but had made seven ODI appearances and three Twenty20 internationals. The 23 year-old is a very promising all-rounder and has already taken 254 first-class wickets along with 2,600 runs for his County Warwickshire.

Eoin Morgan and Samit Patel have been dropped from the Test squad, with Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root included. England play New Zealand in three Test matches starting on 6th March in Dunedin.

England Test squad for New Zealand: Alastair Cook (capt), Nick Compton, Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Matt Prior, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, Steven Finn, James Anderson, Monty Panesar, Graham Onions.

Some consolation for you Eoin – now you can join Middlesex’s pre-season in the cold outdoors!
