Australian opening batsman Shane Watson has been ruled out of the first Test match against South Africa in Brisbane starting on Friday with a calf strain.

Rob Quiney the Victorian opening batsman will take Watson’s place at the top of the order. Quiney has played 53 first class matches and will make his debut on Friday at the age of 30.

Watson sustained his injury when bowling for New South Wales in a State match against Queensland last week. The injury is a big blow for the home side as Watson has become a key player for Australia both with bat and ball in all forms of the game.

South Africa go into Friday’s Test match as the number 1 side in the world and will be hoping to continue their good form from last summer when they successfully defeat England.

Australia squad for first Test: Michael Clarke (captain), David Warner, Ed Cowan, Rob Quiney, Ricky Ponting, Mike Hussey, Matthew Wade (wk), Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus, Mitchell Starc, James Pattinson, Nathan Lyon.

South Africa Test squad: Graeme Smith (capt), Alviro Petersen, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers (wk), Jacques Rudolph, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Thami Tsolekile (wk), Robin Peterson, Rory Kleinveldt, Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Imran Tahir.

Here’s hoping that South Africa, like England before them, get vertigo as they find themselves at Number 1.

Not sure Nathan Lyon is in quite the same class as Saeed Ajmal, so the Saffies are probably safe for a while!
