David Warner outshone Shane Warne in his much anticipated comeback match, as he smashed 102 from 51 balls to lead Sydney Thunder to a six wicket victory over the Melbourne Stars at the MCG.

Warner’s century came off the back of three figures in a Test match at Hobart where Australia were defeated by New Zealand. The New South Welshman will be hoping his good run of form continues into the Test series against India starting on Boxing Day in Melbourne.

On what was built as Warne’s big day, where even his girlfriend Liz Hurley was invited to toss the coin, it turned out to be a bit of an embarrassment for the former leg-spin legend.

Warne only bowled two wicket-less overs where he conceded 19 runs, and was not required with the bat. A large MCG crowd would have gone home disappointed, but Warne himself is optimistic about what lies ahead.

On his personal twitter account Warne said: “Didn’t go to plan for us tonight, but hey, it’s only the first game, we will bounce back.”

The Melbourne Stars take Matthew Hayden’s Brisbane Heat tomorrow at the Gabba where Warne has had great success over the years when playing for Australia.
