Shane Warne’s Melbourne Stars recorded their first win of the Big Bash tournament today as they defeated Brisbane Heat by 8 runs at the Gabba.

In a high scoring game the Stars batted first and amassed 177/7 from their allotted 20 overs. This was largely thanks to Rob Quiney’s blistering 97 from 60 balls. The Stars opener hit 5 fours and 6 huge maximums in his onslaught of the Heat attack. He was well supported in the middle overs by the experienced David Hussey who made 45 from 32 balls.

Nathan Hauritz the former Australian off-spinner was the pick of the bowlers for Brisbane Heat as he took 3/18 from his 4 overs.

The Heat’s innings got off to the best possible start as Matthew Hayden and Brendan McCullum delighted the home crowd with shots all around the wicket. England bowler Jade Dernbach conceded 21 from the first over of the innings.

However, with the introduction of Shane Warne, the innings lost momentum as Warne was able to squeeze the Heat’s batsmen in the middle overs. Warne bowled his 4 overs straight through at the cost of just 22 runs, and also claimed the wicket of danger man McCullum, for 36.

With pressure being built up from Warne’s end, the Stars reaped the rewards from the other, as they took regular Heat wickets. Clint Mckay was the main beneficiary as he claimed 3 wickets from his 4 overs, one of which was the former Australian powerhouse Hayden, who made 22.

The Stars went on to win the game by 8 runs, and they will be thankful for having Warne’s ability and experience when it looked as though they were heading for defeat after three quarters of this match.
