I hope I’m not speaking too soon but it looks like, for this week at least, we are getting some sunshine! The past month has been horrendous and has had a huge impact on the cricket schedule. It was only last week we spent two and a half days watching it rain at Trent Bridge. The rest of the season is going to be a real dogfight for us in both the Championship and the CB40, hopefully the weather doesn’t play too much of a role.
For obvious reasons we have a much changed top order, however each of the guys coming into the side have to see it as a huge opportunity to grab hold of and cement their spot. We have some hugely talented young players at Surrey, but it is now time for all of us to step up and put in some match winning performances. It is by no means going to be easy as we are playing against some top quality opposition, but this is what you play the game for, to test yourself against the best.
End of an era
Ramps was without question one of, if not, the finest players to grace the county game. His record speaks for itself, he had an unbelievable hunger to score runs, and was a true inspiration to all that shared the dressing room with him. The fire inside would sometimes spill over into an infamous blow up in the changing room, but I’m sure without that he would not have been the great player he was!
The club have recently announced the signing of Vikram Solanki. A player of great quality and experience will be a great addition to the squad. The lads will be doing their best to make sure he is representing a Division 1 club next season.
England with work to do
Its not often you can say this about an England side of the last few years but they got well and truly outplayed at The Kia Oval this week! Graeme Smith has already seen off two England captains, I’m hoping for England’s sake that he doesn’t add Andrew Strauss to this list! England are a high quality outfit and I’m sure they will bounce back from this at Headingly in the next Test, but South Africa have shown just how good they are, whilst only using four batters!
