Strauss in the runs as England win tour match

Andrew Strauss scored 78 as England defeated the ICC Combined Associate and Affiliate XI by three wickets in Dubai today.

Chasing an attainable 261 to win on the third afternoon, England achieved this target, but it wasn’t as comfortable as the tourists had hoped.

England lost seven wickets in their pursuit of victory with only captain Andrew Strauss passing 50. Strauss made a fluent 78 from just 96 balls in an innings that included 13 fours and 1 six.

After a good start England lost their way and were reduced to 199/6, still 62 runs short of their target. However, a 61 run seventh wicket partnership between Steven Davies and Stuart Broad steadied the ship. Davies hit the winning runs as he made 37 from 46 balls in an assured innings from England’s reserve wicket-keeper batsman.

Despite only a narrow victory against a competitive ICC XI, England will be pleased to have registered a win after several months without any competitive cricket under their belt. One aim of this current England side under Andy Flower is to win the warm up matches leading into a Test series, much like they did in Australia before defending the Ashes so successfully.

England will face a Pakistan Cricket Board XI on Wednesday, before the first Test match begins on 17th January against Pakistan.
