Strauss and Cook on BBC shortlist

The BBC has announced its shortlist of ten candidates for this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, which includes England stars Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook.

Andrew Strauss has led the England team to number one side in the world in Test matches after historic victories over both Australia and India this year.

England hadn’t beaten Australia down-under since 1987 but managed this achievement this year after a crushing 3-1 series victory. England put the icing on the cake with an innings victory over Australia in the final Test of the series in Sydney in January. The English summer saw India arrive in England holding the tag of the best side in the world. England humiliated the tourist with a 4-0 series victory and took over the crown of number one ranked side in the process.

Strauss has been shortlisted because of his ability to lead his country to success as opposed to his actual performance on the field. The same cannot be said for Alastair Cook. The Essex left-hander has had a year to remember with bat in hand, and has been a key part of team England’s success.

Cook won Man of the Series in The Ashes after scoring 766 runs in five Test matches. He followed this up with a brilliant 294 at Edgbaston against India, which was the sixth highest score by an Englishman in Test match history.

After England performed poorly in the World Cup in the sub-continent in the Spring, Cook was appointed England one-day captain.

Both players should be proud of their achievements this year but both will know that this is a tough award to win, especially after British sport endured an excellent year.

List in full: Mark Cavendish, Darren Clarke, Alastair Cook, Luke Donald, Mo Farah, Dai Greene, Amir Khan, Rory McIlroy, Andy Murray, Andrew Strauss

I’d like to see Cook win it this year but I feel he may miss out. Strauss is a good leader but he hasn’t scored enough runs. Big Darren to win- he is a champion

Anyone think the England team’s performance in the one day series in India under his captaincy may hamper Cooks’ chances?

Decent shout Scott- he was in charge and we were dreadful. Just cant see it going to a cricketer this year. You would have to say that England will win team of the year though?
