Sri Lanka beat Australia by 8 wickets

Sri Lanka captured their first win of the CB series, as they comfortably defeated Australia this morning by 8 wickets at the SCG.

Batting first, Australia were shot out for just 158 inside 41 overs. This could have been much worse for the home side had it not been for a resolute 58 from 64 balls from David Hussey. Batting at 10, Mitchell Starc was the next top scorer for Australia with 17 from 24 balls as he offered Hussey some support in a 49 run partnership for the ninth wicket.

Stand in captain Ricky Ponting failed again as he was dismissed by Maharoof caught and bowled for 2. Maharoof was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers claiming 2-18 from 8 overs.

In reply, Sri Lanka made light work of the Australia total and won the match by 8 wickets in just 24.1 overs. The Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene laid the platform for the chase, with 61 from 67 balls in an innings that included 5 fours. He was well supported by Dilshan (45) and Kumar Sangakkara (30) as the visitors cruised home.

It was a much needed win for Sri Lanka, and will give them confidence ahead of their match against Australia in Brisbane on Sunday. Australia will be hoping that Michael Clarke will have recovered from his hamstring injury in time for the game at the Gabba.
