Sri Lanka 174-6 (20 overs) tied with New Zealand 174-7 (20 overs)
Super Over: Sri Lanka 13-1 beat New Zealand 8-1 by five runs
Lasith Malinga held his nerve in conceding just 8 runs in a super over helping to ensure Sri Lanka defeated New Zealand in Pallekele today.
New Zealand needed 14 runs in the super over to win the match, but fell 6 runs short after New Zeland failed to find the boundary from any off Malinga’s deliveries.
In the match itself, New Zealand batting first posted a competitive 174-7. Rob Nicol top scored for the Black Caps with 58 from 40 balls as he struck 3 fours and 4 sixes.
In reply Sri Lanka recorded exactly the same total for the loss of six wickets forcing the game into a super over. Dilshan played the star role scoring 76 from just 53 balls before he was run out coming back for a second in the penultimate over. He was well supported at the top of the order by Mahela Jayawardene who made a quick fire 44. Sri Lanka collapsed in the second half of their innings after looking favourites for victory, but in the end they left the ground victorious.
The win puts Sri Lanka top of Group A and will give the host nation a boost of reaching the semi-final stages. New Zealand will now know they will more than likely have to win their final two matches of the Super Eight stage in order to qualify.
