CB40, Trent Bridge
Surrey beat Nottinghamshire by 4 wickets
An excellent all-round performance by Matthew Spriegel helped Surrey to an important CB40 victory over Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge last night.
On a tired surface Nottinghamshire were asked to bat first and stuttered to 149 all out. 31 overs of the innings were bowled by Surrey’s spinners who were finding assistance from the surface.
Spriegel opened the bowling and recorded figures of 2-21, including the wickets of Michael Lumb and Riki Wessels. Plenty of batsmen in county cricket are undone by Spriegel when they expect the ball to turn.
England bowler Jade Dernbach claimed 3-39, and stand-in captain Gareth Batty took 2-23. Batty captained Surrey despite the return to action of former skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown.
Despite losing early wickets Surrey were always in control of the run chase. Spriegel top scored with an important 49 helping his team to a 4 wicket victory, and it keeps their hopes alive of qualification to the semi-finals of the competition.
