Spriegel looks ahead to Twenty20

Matt SpriegelT20 Underway

Even though yesterdays training was washed out, not for the first time this season, the anticipation before tonight’s game was palpable! T20 is always a very exciting time of year, action packed games, big crowds and hopefully good weather (don’t take my word for this one though)!

Surrey won the inaugural tournament back in 2003, but we have failed to get out of our group since 2007. With the confidence we got from winning the CB40 last season, combined with our unbeaten start in the same competition this year, we should qualify for the quarter finals this year. We have some of the most powerful top order batsmen in the country and great variation in our bowling attack, not to mention great quality.

The tournament has come at a great time for us. With a couple of disappointing results in the County Championship in the last few weeks it is a chance to start afresh in a new competition before putting all our efforts back into the Championship later in the year.

England Call Ups

Its great news that Jade Dernbach has been called up to England’s one-day squads. He has performed brilliantly for us in one day cricket for a number of years now, and it’s great to see him getting his chance on the international stage. Having played through the youth system with him since the age of 15 he is a real inspiration to all the young guys in our changing room, not to mention hundreds of kids in Surrey’s youth set-up.

Jade being selected obviously means we will be missing him for the majority of theT20, which is a blow. However all this does is give an opportunity for someone else in our squad to step up, and in Stuart Meaker we have a ready made replacement who has already featured in England’s one day setup.

If some of our guys have good tournaments, l wouldn’t be surprised if Jade doesn’t have some Surrey teammates joining him for the World Cup in Sri Lanka in September.

Answer Irelands Call

My good mate Tim Murtagh has been called into the Ireland squad to face Australia next weekend. He has been a fantastic performer for Middlesex over the last five seasons and now has the chance to test himself on the international stage. I’ve spent the last week checking my family tree to see if I have any Irish blood in me, unfortunately my search was fruitless!
