South Africa’s draw with New Zealand has given England a guaranteed pay-out of $175,000 from the ICC for being the number 1 Test side in the world come 1st April.

South Africa would have gained this position had they defeated New Zealand 3-0 in their recent Test series in New Zealand, but thanks to a final day washout, South Africa were unable to claim 8 wickets in order to win the first Test in Dunedin.

England failed to register a victory in their recent Test series in Dubai against Pakistan, which opened the door for South Africa to overtake Andrew Strauss’ team. England have just arrived in Sri Lanka for a two match Test series.

Speaking of England gaining the top ranking, Graham Gooch said: “It was obviously a goal of the team and for English cricket to reach that position. You can only stay at that level if you keep winning series, keep winning individual matches. That’s what we need to focus on.”

England’s first Test match against Sri Lanka begins on the 26th March in Galle.
