First Test, Brisbane
South Africa 255-2 v Australia
South Africa dominated Australia on day one in Brisbane thanks to an unbeaten century partnership between Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis.
The tourists closed the day on 255-2 after only 82 overs were possible at The Gabba, with Amla 90 not out and Jacques Kallis 84 unbeaten. Australia toiled hard all day but looked ineffective on what looked a good surface for batting.
The day had started well for the home side when James Pattinson had Graeme Smith trapped in front for 10. However, Australia could only force one further mistake all day, when Alviro Petersen was caught by Michael Hussey for 64 off the bowling of Nathan Lyon.
Late on in the day, Peter Siddle dropped a sharp return chance off Amla before the umpires took the players off the field 10 minutes early for bad light.
Australia will know they need early wickets tomorrow morning if they are to get back into this match and will be fully aware that both batsmen at the crease have an appetite for big runs when given the chance.
