Former England bowler Sajid Mahmood has joined Somerset on loan from Lancashire until the end of the season.
Mahmood has not featured in four day cricket for Lancashire since May after falling out of favour with Coach Peter Moores. The 30 year-old has played in 8 Test matches for England, the last being during England’s tour of Australia in 2006-2007 when England lost the series 5-0.
Somerset have been hampered this season by an extensive injury list and it was felt that they needed to strengthen the squad at the back end of the year. Despite this, Mahmood will not be eligible to play for Lancashire in Saturday’s T20 finals day.
Speaking about the signing of Mahmood, Somerset’s director of cricket Brian Rose said ‘I noticed he was not being picked by Lancashire and, as we do not play them between now and the end of the season, the move was attractive to all parties.’
Mahmood will likely making his championship debut for Somerset tomorrow in their match against Sussex at Taunton.
