Somerset have signed Veron Philander as their overseas player for the first part of the 2012 county season.

The South African all-rounder will be at Taunton for the months of April and May. Philander has burst onto the international scene in recent times and is currently competing in a Test series for South Africa against Sri Lanka.

Philander, 26, made his Test debut in last month’s series against Australia where he took 14 wickets in just two matches earning him the man of the series award.

The ex-Cape Cobras player boasts an excellent first class career that has seen him claim 265 wickets at an average of 19.72. Philander has played county cricket before when he represented Middlesex.

Somerset will be hoping that in early English conditions, the medium pace bowler will play a big role in ensuring a good start to the season. Somerset have recently lost swing bowler Charl Willoughby who signed for Essex just last month.

Somerset’s director of cricket Brian Rose had this to say about Philander on the club website: “Watching him bowl against Australia I was immediately impressed by his ability and character in an especially demanding debut on his home ground. His all-round ability will be a great asset”

Somerset start their County Championship season against recently promoted Middlesex at Taunton.

With the arrival of South Africa in the second half of next summer, Philanders involvement with Somerset will provide England a good opportunity to see how he operates at close quarters.
