South African captain Graeme Smith will miss this seasons IPL competition because he is to undergo an ankle operation.

Despite the surgery, Smith is expected to be fit for South Africa’s tour of England this summer. The left-hander has been struggling with the injury for the past few months, and the decision was taken by Smith and the medical staff to have the surgery, in the hope for a full recovery.

Speaking about the injury, Smith said: “I’m very disappointed to be missing out on the IPL this year. I was looking forward to my second season with Pune Warriors. But my ankle has been troubling me for some time so it will be a relief to have it repaired.”

The last time South Africa visited England they won the Test series in 2008 under Smith. In the 2003 series in England, Smith scored a record 714 runs, including two double centuries.

What a shame that he won’t be playing. One of the greatest players out there in the game and knows how to smash the ball out the middle.
