Sir John Major the former prime minister has resigned from the MCC committee because of a disagreement over the redevelopment plan at Lord’s cricket ground.

A statement from the MCC read: “MCC has today accepted with great reluctance the resignation from the club’s committee of Sir John Major because of fundamental disagreements over the direction of policy on the Vision for Lord’s; the manner in which decisions have been reached, and their wider implications for the club.”

It was just a fortnight ago that the committee had agreed to upgrade Lords on a ‘stand by stand’ basis. The plan was to start at the Pavilion end of the ground and finish the development at the Nursery end.

Major has been a big supporter of cricket over the years and is regularly seen at The Oval supporting both Surrey and England.

Major said: “My decision to resign from the committee of the world’s pre-eminent cricket club has been reached with very great sadness, for me cricket has been a lifelong and enduring passion and will remain so.”
