Australian fast bowler Peter Siddle has been ruled out of playing for Essex in this summer’s Twenty20 competition because of a back injury.

Siddle had to return home when on Australia’s latest tour of the Caribbean after complaining of lower back soreness. After being treated by the Australian medical staff, Siddle has been told that he needs a full months rest followed by a rehabilitation process.

The Victorian has played in 31 Test matches and in this time has taken 114 wickets at an average of 29.03.

Essex will be hoping to secure another overseas to join the county for the competition which begins in mid-June.

Paul Grayson Essex’s head coach said: “We understand when we sign any overseas player there is a risk of an injury on international duty.”
