Rain delays start in Johannesburg

Heavy rain has prevented the start of play on day five between Australia and South Africa.

However, the forecast is set to improve which should bring about a conclusion to this enthralling Test match.

If the players return to the field the tourists will require a further 168 more runs for victory with 7 second innings wickets in hand.

The good news for Australia is that former captain Ricky Ponting is at the crease on 54 not out. Ponting started to show glimpses of his old self last night, as he was scoring boundaries all around the wicket.

Michael Clarke (1 not out) will join Ponting at the crease after Usman Khwaja was dismissed in the dying moments of play yesterday for a well-made 65.

Australia will be desperate for the weather to clear as they currently trail South Africa 1-0 in this two match Test series.

This ones going down to the wire…2 wickets or 20 runs. Cracking test match – why aren’t they playing more?

Just another example that Test cricket at present comprises irregular contests with a lack of meaningful competition and is a result of the dangerous self interest of the international board. Empty stadiums and lack of interest means that if Test cricket is lost to the Caribbean, New Zealand and to Pakistan then the whole will become fatally devalued with only four countries being bothered.
