William Porterfield helped Warwickshire defeat Durham by five wickets in their opening FLT20 match at Chester-le-Street.

The Irishman smashed 83 vital runs which helped contribute to The Bears chasing down a total of 152 for victory.

Earlier in the day, Ian Blackwell hit 46 not out for the home side, which got them to a below par 151/3 off their 20 overs. Steffan Piolet was Warwickshire’s hero with the ball, as his four overs cost just 19 runs claiming two wickets along the way.

If Warwickshire batted well they were always favourites to overhaul this total, and when Irelands captain Porterfield got going, it was achieved with some ease.

The left-hander hit 10 fours and 2 huge sixes in his innings of 83, and with one run needed he was unfortunately run-out.

However, the damage had been done and victory was secured with 11 balls to spare. A great start to this year’s Twenty20 campaign for Warwickshire after the disappointments of losing in last year’s quarter finals.

Durham will be hoping to bounce back straight away from this defeat as they travel to New Road on Sunday to take on Worcestershire.
