Ricky Ponting’s manager has confirmed that the former Australian captain will not be playing county cricket in 2012.

Ponting has been heavily linked with a return to Somerset where he enjoyed a short stint with the county in 2004.

Speaking on Twitter, Ponting’s manager said: “Ricky is not turning his back on playing county cricket in the future but the 2012 season does not line up with his current priorities. He will use the downtime to spend more time with his family and refresh after a hectic past nine months.”

Ponting resigned the Australian captaincy in March 2011 after Australia lost the Ashes and Ponting was struggling for form. In recent times Ponting has also retired from ODI cricket, but remains a key performer for his country in the longer form of the game.

The 37 year-old has scored 13,200 Test runs and is rated as the best Australian batsman of all time by some.
