Ricky Ponting finished his first class career in style yesterday at The Oval with a match saving 169 not out for Surrey against Nottinghamshire.

The 38 year old resumed day 4 at The Oval on 41 not out and remained at the crease until the captains shook hands at 5pm without a result possible. Surrey will be very grateful for this effort after looking as though defeat was on the cards.

Ponting played in 158 Test matches with his best effort coming against India at Melbourne where he made a stunning 257.

He also scored 13,704 runs in ODI cricket and played vital roles in three World Cup wins in which Ponting captained two of the victories.

After Twenty20 commitments with Surrey and Mumbai, Ponting will hang his boots up and beging a new chapter of his life. There is no question that fans all over the world will miss watching Ponting with bat in hand.
