Ponting and Clarke put Australia on top

Former captain Ricky Ponting and current skipper Michael Clarke helped put Australia in a strong position against India on day one in Sydney.

After winning the toss India elected to bat at the SCG, but were shot out just after tea for 191. India’s captain MS Dhoni top scored for the visitors with an unbeaten 57 in an innings that included 8 fours. Sachin Tendulkar who remains on 99 International hundreds was looking good before he was clean bowled by new bowling sensation James Pattinson for 41.

India’s batting collapse was yet again down to the three Australian quick bowlers. Pattinson claimed 4-43 in another impressive display from the youngster, whilst Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle both picked up 3 wickets. Today was further evidence that the Indian batsmen appear to struggle with pace and bounce.

In reply Australia got off to a poor start as they lost their first 3 wickets with just 37 runs on the board. Zaheer Khan claimed all three wickets in a highly skilled spell of swing bowling.

However, Clarke joined Ponting at the crease and together they counter attacked the Indian bowling. The pair had added 79 runs, before the umpires took the players off the field at stumps, with Australia on 116/3.

Australia will now feel they are favourites to win this Test match providing they bat well tomorrow morning. They will resume just 75 runs behind India with 7 first innings wickets in hand.
