Andy Flower has confirmed that Kevin Pietersen will open the batting for England in the upcoming one-day series against Pakistan.

Pietersen has featured in this role for England before when he opened in the World Cup in India before being ruled out of the tournament through injury.

Pietersen’s form in the shorter version of the game has been scratchy at best, and it is thought that this maybe the Surrey batsman’s last chance to prove himself in one-day colours.

The 31 year-old struggled in the recent Test series in the UAE against Pakistan only scoring 67 runs in six innings.

Speaking about Pietersen’s promotion to the top of the order, England head coach Andy Flower said: “He’s a very, very fine cricketer – a very dangerous cricketer – and someone we’d like to give the option of facing as many balls as possible in the limited-overs game.”

England begin their four match one-day series against Pakistan on Monday where they will be looking to salvage some pride after being whitewashed in the Test series.
