Pietersen out of New Zealand series

April 16, 2013

KPKevin Pietersen has been ruled of out England’s Test match series with New Zealand after not recovering from his knee injury in time.

With such an important summer in English cricket ahead, England’s management team have made the call that Pietersen need’s further rest to be 100% fit for what they see as the more important part of the summer. England host the ICC Champions Trophy in June, followed by the Ashes in final part of the summer.

It is not thought at this stage that Pietersen will require surgery on his troublesome right knee, but Pietersen and England have not ruled it out.

Pietersen’s injury will concern England who will also be without Graeme Swann during the New Zealand Test series, after Swann underwent elbow surgery in America last month. Swann and Pietersen have become key players for England and their absence significantly weakens the side.

One bit of good news for the ECB is that Tim Bresnan will play his first match today since being ruled out of the away series in New Zealand with an elbow injury.

With Pietersen missing it provides a great chance for the likes of Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow to nail down their spots in the team ahead of the Australians arriving.

So no KP and no Swanny for the return series with the Kiwis. Step forward Monty the batsman and Joe Root the bowler.

Here’s my punt for KP’s replacement. Eoin Morgan! He’s certainly on fire in the IPL.
