Pietersen was forced to retire from all one-day cricket because he was unwilling to play ODI cricket for England. However, there was speculation in recent weeks that England and Pietersen would make a U-turn on this decision, enabling the Surrey batsman to take part in the World Cup in Sri Lanka.
England’s ODI captain Alastair Cook has been included in the squad despite not featuring in this form of the game since 2009. Other notable inclusions were Surrey’s off-spinner Gareth Batty and England’s Test match wicket-keeper Matt Prior.
