Australian quickie James Pattinson has been diagnosed with an early sign of stress fracture of the lower back and will miss the remainder of the Ashes series in England. He complained of hip and back soreness after bowling in the second test at Lord’s and a subsequent scan confirmed his worst fears. Pattinson, who had claimed 7 wickets in the two tests so far, bowled well at Trent Bridge but seem troubled by the traditional Lord’s slope. Despite batting at number 11, he currently heads the team’s batting average at 36.0.
Pattinson is likely to be replaced for the third test at Old Trafford starting on 1 August by Mitchell Starc, who played at Trent Bridge, but Jackson Bird and James Faulkner are also in the frame. Australia have said nothing so far about calling up a replacement from their A team.
