1st Test, Napier
Day 1: New Zealand 331-5 v Zimbabwe

Ross Taylor recorded his sixth Test match hundred on day 1 in Napier against Zimbabwe as New Zealand put themselves into a strong position at 331-5.

The day started well for the home side as Martin Guptill (51) and Brendan McCullum (83) put on 124 for the first wicket. However, Zimbabwe struck back in claiming 4 wickets in the afternoon as they restricted the home side to 196-4.

Daniel Vettori joined his captain Ross Taylor and together they reasserted New Zealand’s dominance. Vettori was dismissed just before the close for 38, but Taylor went on, and finished on 111 not out at stumps. Taylor’s century came from 168 balls, and included 13 fours and 2 sixes. He will be joined in the morning by Bradley Watling who has 15 unbeaten runs.

The pick of the bowlers for the visitors was 22 year-old paceman Kyle Jarvis, who bowled 22 overs today, at a cost of just 56 runs, and picked up 1 wicket.

Zimbabwe will be hoping for early wickets tomorrow and to dismiss Taylor without further damage as they try to remain in this contest in Napier.
