Graham Napier the Essex all-rounder has equalled the record for the number of sixes in a first class innings.

The record has been held for the last 16 years by Andrew Symonds who also hit 16 maximums at Abergavenny playing for Gloucestershire against Glamorgan in 1995.

Napier hit 196 from 130 balls in what was a brutal attack on Surrey’s bowling at the private school in Croydon.

The big hitting Essex-man also holds the record for the number of sixes in a T-20 innings.

The visitors were eventually bowled out with Napier the last man to go for 548 which would have disappointed Surrey, who won the toss and invited Essex to bat first.

Surrey will need to bat well for the remainder of this game to stay in the contest, but they have the firepower to do so with Mark Ramprakash and Kevin Pietersen in their ranks.
