Murtagh crosses the pond

January 30, 2012

Tim MurtaghMiddlesex opening bowler Tim Murtagh has found a copy of his family tree which states that Vincent (his Grandfather) Murtagh was born in Dublin, making the medium pacer eligible to represent the green of Ireland.

Murtagh is a traditional Irish name, and the 30 year-old has Irish blood on both sides of his family from previous generations. Despite being a very successful county professional, Murtagh has been unable to force his way into England reckoning after representing England U19’s in the 1999 World Cup. The former Surrey player and current Middlesex opening bowler has taken 365 first-class wickets at an average of 28.53.

Murtagh has had a busy winter getting the relevant documents signed, in order to put himself into contention for the Twenty20 World Cup in Sri Lanka in September, which Ireland have yet to qualify for.

Ireland will be hoping to tap into Murtagh’s experience within the professional game as they look to enhance their ever growing reputation at international level.
