The Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has signed for Durham for this seasons Twenty20 competition.

The left-arm fast bowler will join South African Herschelle Gibbs as the second overseas player at Durham. In recent times Durham have had some big name overseas at the county, including David Warner, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ross Taylor.

Despite performing well in the county championship, Durham have struggled in the shorter form of the game. The county have only reached one Twenty20 finals day since the formation of the competition.

Speaking of the season ahead and the signing of Johnson, Durham chief executive David Harker said: “One of our ambitions for 2012 is to get to T20 Finals Day and we have made the investment to bring in players that we feel will enhance our already talented squad to help us achieve that.

It’ll be great for us to welcome Mitchell to the set up and I’m sure our supporters will give him and Herschelle a very warm north east welcome.”

Johnson will arrive in mid-June ready for the start of Durham’s T20 campaign.
