Middlesex County Cricket Club are planning a move to bring Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga to the county for this season’s Friends Life Twenty20 competition.

Malinga has taken 125 wickets in a career of 95 Twenty20 matches. Malinga has recently retired from Test match cricket so that he can remain fit for one-day cricket with Sri Lanka.

Middlesex have a history of bringing in big signings in this competition. In 2010 Adam Gilchrist and David Warner played as the two overseas players.

Middlesex’s campaign gets underway on 14th March when they take on Surrey in the London derby. The county will be hoping for a repeat performance to that of 2008 when they won the tournament on a dramatic finals day at the Rose Bowl.

In other news, Middlesex appear close to a deal allowing Scott Newman to go out on loan to Kent. The opening batsman is unlikely to start in the Middlesex team after Joe Denly moved to the London based club this winter.
