Lions defeat Panthers in London derby

June 24, 2011

Surrey defeating their local rivals Middlesex by 21 runs last night FL T20 at The Kia Oval.

Having won the toss in front of a big home crowd Surrey elected to bat, and this proved to be the right decision as they went about posting 163-5 off their 20 overs.

Rory Hamilton-Brown (30) and Jason Roy (32) got the home team off to a flying start as they helped pass 50 within 5 overs.

The introduction of left arm spinner Tom Smith and medium pacer Neil Dexter brought about a Surrey collapse in the middle overs.

However the innings was re-built well in the form of Tom Maynard who finished with 50 from just 37 balls. He was well supported in the final few overs by Yasir Arafat who added 28 from 17 deliveries, included 20 off the final over bowled by Steven Crook.

Middlesex only lost 3 wickets in their chase but fell 21 runs short in what was a strange looking final scorecard. To be only 3 wickets down and so far short of the target is not common practice in a run chase.

Scott Newman top scored for the visitors with 61 from 57 balls but his efforts were in vain as Surrey fans left the ground with the bragging rights over their visitors from over the Thames.
