Former Essex county cricketer Mervyn Westfield has been jailed for four months after admitting a corruption charge relating to a 40 over match on the 5th September in 2009.

In a pro40 match against Durham, Westfield had agreed to bowl an over in which he would allow Durham to score a certain number of runs, in return for a payment of £6,000.

Westfield is the first cricketer in England to be prosecuted for spot-fixing.

Former Pakistan international Danish Kaneria is also alleged to have been involved as the ‘go between’ with Westfield. Kaneria is thought to have received £4,000 as his part of the deal.

Along with his jail sentence, Westfield has also received an interim suspension order from the England and Wales Cricket Board.
