World champions India eased to victory against the West Indies in Trinidad yesterday.

Playing their first ODI match since their triumph in Mumbai in April, India made light work of a struggling West Indian outfit in defeating them by 4 wickets.

The home side won the toss and elected to bat in Port of Spain, but soon found themselves in trouble, and in the end could only muster 214-9 off their allotted 50 overs. Harbhajan Singh was the pick of the Indian bowlers claiming 3-32 off his 10 overs.

India lost three early wickets in reply, but thanks to Suresh Raina (43) and a man of the match unbeaten 68 from Rohit Sharma, India were always in control.

The match finished with Harbhajan Singh smashing a six, ensuring India take a 1-0 lead in the series with 31 balls to spare.

The second of the five match ODI series takes place in Trinidad on Wednesday.
