Here’s what we think of this current South African team
Despite winning the first ever Champions Trophy back in 1998, South Africa have since had very limited success in major limited overs competitions. However, this squad has high aims to change this.
The Proteas’ will compete for a semi-final berth in a group alongside Pakistan, India, and West Indies.
Currently, De Villiers (captain) and Hashim Amla are ranked joint number 1 batsmen in the world in this format of the game. Amla has been a revelation for South Africa in recent times, by opening the innings the team has someone who consistently makes big centuries. De Villiers plays more the role of a finisher in this side, and on his day is simply breath-taking, with the ability find the boundary in any corner of a ground.
Not only do South Africa possess this talent with the bat, but their bowling is equally as frightening. Dale Steyn is currently the world’s premier swing bowler, and he will be licking his lips in early season conditions that will aid his style of bowling. He will be well backed up by the pace and bounce of Morne Morkel who is coming on leaps and bounds as an opening bowler.
South Africa have been taking their preparations for this tournament very seriously, and have spent recent weeks in the Netherlands in doing so. Despite missing the experience of Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis, we can all expect South Africa to be very competitive in every match they play, and a place in the final of this competition is very attainable for this talented group of players.
