Sydney, Second Test
Day 4: Australia 659-4 beat India 191 & 400 by an innings and 68 runs

Ben Hilfenhaus was the star man at the SCG today as he took 5 wickets in ensuring India were defeated inside 4 days, as Australia go 2-0 up in the four match Test series.

India showed more fight today in posting a second innings total of 400, but they were still defeated by an innings and 68 runs after Australia had dominated the first three days in Sydney.

Sachin Tendulkar looked set to reach his 100th international hundred, but on 80 he was caught by Michael Hussey off the part-time bowling of Michael Clarke. Tendulkar was entertaining all at the SCG in an innings that included 9 boundaries, and as he left the field he was given a standing ovation by the locals.

Gautum Gamhir (83), VVS Laxman (66), and R Ashwin (62) all contributed for the tourists but yet again none of the Indian batsman were able to register a century. This was largely down to the brilliance of Hilfenhaus, who in nearly 33 overs claimed 5-106 in conditions that were good for batting.

With just two Test matches remaining in the series the best India can now salvage is a draw by winning the two remaining Test matches. This comes as a real disappointment for Duncan Fletcher’s side who had high hope of a first series victory in Australia prior to the first Test match.

Australia continued their good record at the SCG in a game that will be remembered for Michael Clarke’s triple century, and will head to Perth looking to win the series in style. The third Test match gets underway on Friday 13th January on what will likely be a quick WACA surface.
