Former South African opening batsman Herschelle Gibbs will join Durham for this year’s FLT20 campaign.

Gibbs is no stranger to county cricket and has had previously represented Glamorgan and Yorkshire. Gibbs will join up with his new county in the North of England in mid-June when the competition begins and will be available for the duration of the tournament.

The 37 year-old has recently featured in domestic T20 cricket for the Perth Scorchers. At his best, Gibbs is a destructive opening batsman who enjoys hitting over the top in the early overs. Gibbs has 3,050 domestic T20 runs to his name, and Durham will be hoping he can add to this number significantly in 2012.

Speaking of his move to Durham, Gibbs said: “I’ve been performing pretty well in the T20 format and I think I can offer some real variation to the side. I’m looking forward to my experience contributing to plenty of Durham wins”
