Here we go again

March 13, 2012

Matt SpriegelSo pre-season is upon us which means two things to me: Fitness testing, and new kit. It seems like only yesterday since we were in the dressing room at Lords sipping on a few celebratory beers, after our CB40 triumph against Somerset.

We reported back for duty last week at the Kia Oval, and it’s fair to say the boys look in great shape. This winter, the squad found themselves training and playing in various parts of the world, so it was great to catch up with all, about their winters on, and off the field..

Raring to go

After last season’s success in all formats of the game, 2012 cannot come quick enough for this team. What the guy’s aren’t so keen on in pre-season, are the fitness tests, and bat signing. Bats are currently filling two of the corporate boxes at the ground, and each bat requires a signature from the whole staff! Being the consummate professional, Tim Linely timed himself (geek). 40 minutes later, Linners had finished, and it’s fair to say that his speed was excellent, but the quality of his signing was not. Probably on a par with his banter.

And then it was the turn of fitness testing. Without saying we enjoyed it, there’s no question that the squad are extremely fit, as the results proved. Under the leadership of Chris Adams this is expected, and there isn’t a single member of the squad that is not buying into this. Fitness is something that is monitored throughout the year these days. It isn’t an easy task to maintain it through the season with matches coming thick and fast, but something that no doubt helps us when we hit August and September, and find ourselves in what are must win games.

Back to watching weather forecasts

Whilst some counties are jetting off round the world to exotic locations, we here at Surrey are staying put in South London. As nice as it is to go to Cape Town or Barbados, if the weather is kind enough here for us to get outside, I think it is far more beneficial to be practicing in English conditions, ahead of the start of the season. The conditions overseas just cannot replicate county cricket in April.

However, if we have a month where the heavens open, we will be subjected to the indoor school, which won’t benefit our cricket or tans.

Totally agree with your point on preperation. Why go abroad and play on wickets will be nothing like county cricket in April!
