Whilst everyone else is hiding away indoors back home to avoid the cold, l have just about stopped sweating from a fitness session which finished about an hour ago! The last few days in Perth have been scorching, with temperatures in the late 30’s.
I have been out here for just over two weeks, flying in just in time for some NYE celebrations, which put a slight delay on me being able to get over my jet lag! I am playing for Perth CC again, a side l have played for in 3 of the last 4 winters for different periods of time. It’s a great club and it’s fantastic to be able to come back here.
We are lying 10th in the league, having won my first game out here, and are in the middle of another match against a side which includes Nathan Coulter-Nile, who l faced at the end of last Saturday, opening the batting chasing 242. Its fantastic to play club cricket of such a high standard and was a really good test. The way it works over here though is that if the Perth Scorchers win their game tonight against Luke Wrights’ Melbourne Stars they wont be available next Saturday! It will make our run chase far easier but l enjoyed the test of last week, so would be keen for that to carry on.
During the weeks, whilst everyone else is working its important to hunt out some other English guys who you can train and socialise with because otherwise you tend to get pretty bored and lonely! So it’s good that James Taylor, Ben Brown and Sean Terry are out here. Once training is done and dusted we head down to the beach or into the pool, it’s slightly different to getting back indoors and wrapping up on the couch!
Unfortunately, the guy l am living with doesn’t have sky so it is difficult to keep in touch with all the sport that goes on all over the world. So l’m having to invite myself round to other peoples house to try and watch some sport! It’s something I am struggling to live without, and it feels like l have gone back in time! Fortunately the Australian Open is on for the next couple of weeks and l watched Andy Murray play yesterday, so hopefully he can go far in the tournament and give me something half decent to watch on the television.
