Former West Indies captain Chris Gayle has signed for Somerset as their overseas player for the 2012 Tewnty20 competition.

Gayle, who is currently playing as a freelance Twenty20 specialist, will replace Kieron Pollard who is unavailable because of his commitments with the West Indies team on their tour of England this summer.

Gayle will join some hard hitting batsmen at Taunton, including Marcus Trescothick, Craig Kieswetter, Jos Buttler, and Peter Trego. Somerset narrowly missed out on being crowned Twenty20 champions in 2011 when they were defeated by Leicestershire Foxes in the final at Edgbaston.

Gayle is regarded worldwide as one of the cleanest strikers of a ball going around, and speaking of their new signing, Somerset director of cricket said: “We are delighted to have been able to sign Chris for this season, he is a tremendously exciting player and one of the people who would get into any world T20 XI”

Gayle will arrive in the West Country in mid-June when the tournament begins.
