It has been revealed that England head coach Andy Flower tried to persuade Kevin Pietersen to stay on and play in all three forms of the game.
Pietersen has stated that the reason for his decision was that players were put through a punishing schedule and that there was no other option.
Flower told BBC Test Match Special: “When Kevin told me he wanted to retire from one-day cricket I must have had three or four subsequent meetings with him where I tried to dissuade him from doing so. I think it’s really sad he won’t be paying all three forms of the game. He’s in incredible form, technically he’s excellent.”
We have seen in recent times that Flower has been keen to rest his players in certain matches in the hope of managing the schedule. England have turned back to Ian Bell in ODI cricket in Pietersen’s absence.
