Essex County Cricket Club have announced that New Zealand all-rounder James Franklin will join the club for this summer’s FLT20 competition.

Franklin has been named as Essex’s second overseas player for the 20 over competition with Australian Peter Siddle being the other.

Franklin, 31, is currently playing in the IPL for the Mumbai Indians, and was also part of the Big Bash in Australia playing for the Adelaide Strikers.

Franklin adds variety to any line-up with his left arm swing bowling and his ability to make substancial contributions in the middle order with the bat. In his T20 career to date, Franklin has scored 2086 runs at an average of 33.11, and has taken 49 wickets.

Paul Grayson, the Essex head coach said: “We are delighted to welcome James to the club. He obviously has huge county experience having played here a few seasons. He has shown his ability in the 20-over format of the game with his outstanding IPL record.”

Franklin will arrive in England in early June before the tournament gets underway. In 2011 Leicestershire were champions of this format of the game when they beat Somerset in finals day at Edgbaston.
