Essex announce Petersen signing

Essex County Cricket Club have revealed that South African batsman Alviro Petersen will be joining the county for the first half of the 2012 season.

Petersen who has played 10 Tests and 17 one-day internationals captained Glamorgan last season. Petersen has stated that he would have liked to continue his career in Cardiff, but the Welsh based county decided to opt for Australian Marcus North as their overseas player this year.

Petersen will be based in Chelmsford until mid-June before heading back to South Africa.

Speaking of heading to Essex in early April, Petersen on Twitter said: “Delighted to have signed a short-term contract with Essex CCC from the start of the season until mid-June 2012.”

Essex will be hoping that 2012 can see them gain promotion out of division 2 of the County Championship.
