England pick Monty for UAE

England have named their squad for their upcoming series in the United Arab Emirates, and as expected, Monty Panesar has been included as the second spinner.

England will take 16 players in the touring party that heads to Dubai in the New Year with Andrew Strauss captaining the side. England will know they are in for a tough series against a Pakistan team who in recent times have had victories over both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The big talking point before Geoff Miller’s announcement this morning was the choice of the second spinner. England were either going to go with Samit Patel or Monty Panesar. Patel has a lot to offer with the ball, and bats very well in the middle order, but England opted with what they thought was their best second spinner in Panesar. Panesar was rewarded with a place on the trip after taking 67 county championship wickets for Sussex in 2011.

Surrey fast bowler Chris Tremlett is back in the squad after missing the Indian series because of a back injury and will be hoping to regain his place in the starting xi. It is though that James Anderson and Stuart Broad will be first choice seamers, with the third selection being a shootout between Tremlett, Tim Bresnan and Steven Finn. Finn impressed the selectors in the recent ODI tour of India, when he consistently bowled up over 90mph.

Steven Davies has been selected as the reserve wicket-keeper for the trip, but only an injury to Matt Prior will see Davies take the gloves. Prior is currently rated by most cricket observers as the best keeper-batsman in the world. Davies has been out of favour with England since being dropped from the one-day squad in Australia at the start of the year, but was reselected after a good season with Surrey where he helped his adopted club get promotion back to division one of the county championship.

Eoin Morgan is welcomed back into the squad after missing most of last summer with injury, and is expected to go straight back into the starting line-up at the expense of Ravi Bopara, who also boards the plane to the UAE.

England have two warm up matches starting on the 3rd January before the first Test match gets under way in Dubai on 17th January.

Squad in full: AJ Strauss (Capt, Middlesex), JM Anderson (Lancashire), IR Bell (Warwickshire), RS Bopara (Essex), TT Bresnan (Yorkshire), SCJ Broad (Nottinghamshire), AN Cook (Essex), SM Davies (wkt, Surrey), ST Finn (Middlesex), EJG Morgan (Middlesex), MS Panesar (Sussex), KP Pietersen (Surrey), MJ Prior (wkt, Sussex), GP Swann (Nottinghamshire), CT Tremlett (Surrey), IJL Trott (Warwickshire).
