South Africa defeated Sri Lanka in Bloemfontein yesterday by 4 runs according to Duckworth Lewis, handing the home side an unassailable 3-0 series lead.

Sri Lanka batted first on what looked a good wicket for batting, and got off to the perfect start as Upul Tharanga and Tillakeratne Dilshan put on 94 for the first wicket. Dilshan was dismissed for 33, but Tharanga went on to top score for the visitors with 58 from 65 balls.

Sri Lanka finished their innings on 266-9, as Nuwan Kulasekara added a handy 40 late on in the innings. Lonwabo Tsotsobe was the pick of the South African bowlers as he conceded just 40 runs from his 10 overs and picked up one wicket.

In reply, the game looked well poised when South Africa reached 179-5 off 34 overs, needing a further 88 runs from 96 balls. However, a thunderstorm hit the ground at Bloemfontein and forced the players off the field. Due to the heavy downpour the players were unable to get back on, which handed South Africa the victory as they led by 4 runs on the Duckworth Lewis method.

The mainstay of the South African innings was Francois du Plessis who made 72 before being run out by Angelo Matthews. AB de Villiers (38*), and Albie Morkel (7*) were the men at the crease when the storm hit.

Sri Lanka would have been disappointed with this outcome as had they removed one of these batsmen in a hurry, they themselves would have won the game.

Very cool innings under pressure from AB. He knew if he got out that Duckwork Lewis would change in favour of Sri Lanka
