Dilshan resigns as Sri Lanka captain

January 23, 2012

DilshanTillakaratne Dilshan has resigned from the captaincy of the Sri Lankan national team in all formats of the game with immediate effect.

Dilshan was appointed captain after the 2011 cricket world cup, and has resigned less than a year into the job. In that time Sri Lanka have lost Test series to England, Pakistan, Australia and South Africa, and have performed poorly in the one-day cricket.

Sri Lankan cricket has faced huge problems in recent times, with Sri Lankan players not being paid by the board, as well as losing their iconic figure of Muttaih Muralitheran who retired in 2011 after taking over 800 Test match wickets.

It is expected that Dilshan will continue to play for Sri Lanka, as he still remains one of the most destructive opening batsman in the world. Local media reports in Sri Lanka have suggested that Mahela Jayawardene will be in line for a second spell as captain.
