Countdown to ICC World Cup… Can Ireland spring a surprise?

April 26, 2010

Ireland return to the Caribbean for this week’s Twenty20 World Cup looking to spring a surprise or two – who can forget their previous Caribbean giant killing act when they secured a famous victory over Pakistan three years ago?

This time around they’re grouped with the host nation (West Indies) and an inconsistent England side and they know that they will have to beat one of the Test playing nations if they are to advance to the Super Eight stage of the Twenty20 World Cup and repeat the success they had last year in England.

Slightly wiser…

“We have played that little bit more Twenty20 than we had going into the last World Cup, so we are slightly wiser about Twenty20 cricket” says the former West Indies batsman and Ireland Coach Phil Simmons.

It seems the mood in the camp is upbeat and positive and with the hosts under pressure to perform and nobody really sure which England side is going to show up, Simmons sees no reason why a shock can’t be secured – “this is the group we would have chosen”.

Ireland kick off their World Cup campaign against West Indies in Guyana on Friday 30th April 21:00 GMT – follow the action live with RouletteCricket.
